San Francisco 49ers

49ers Host Bears Tonight in “Battle of Backup QBs”

Both the Chicago Bears (7-2-0) and the San Francisco 49ers (6-2-1) will play each other tonight without their starting quarterbacks. Bears starting QB Jay Cutler is out after sustaining a concussion in a vicious helmet-to-helmet collision with Texans LB Tim Dobbins in last Sunday's game against Houston at Soldier Field. The NFL later levied a $30,000 fine on Dobbins for the illegal tackle. Instead of Cutler, the Bears will use veteran backup QB Jason Campbell as their starting quarterback. Despite throwing for 94 yards against the Texans, Campbell was unable to lead his team to victory, and the Bears ultimately fell to Houston, 13-6. 49ers QB Alex Smith is also out with a concussion after two substantial hits in last Sunday's home game against the St. Louis Rams. After initially being cleared to practice last Thursday, Smith later failed some final concussion tests and has not been cleared to play in tonight's game. With Smith out for tonight's game, San Francisco will be using backup QB Colin Kaepernick. Although Kaepernick is less experienced than Bears QB Jason Campbell, he is also younger and more athletic. With tonight's match up featuring two backup quarterbacks from two teams with similar records, fans will be expecting an exciting and unpredictable game.
