Bears Narrowly Defeat Panthers 23-22, With Last-Minute Field Goal

After trailing Carolina for most of the game, the Chicago Bears rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Panthers 23-22. One of the primary reasons this game was so close was due to the strong Panthers defense, which held the Bears to a total of 79 yards rushing. Bears QB Jay Cutler bore the brunt of the Panthers defensive assault, getting sacked six times, fumbling twice, and throwing one interception. The Panthers also dominated possession for most of the game, keeping the ball for 36:38, in comparison to the Bears 23:22 time of possession. With this loss, the Panthers fall to a 1-6 record for the season. The Panthers could use your home field support! After starting the scoring with their first quarter touchdown, the Bears allowed Carolina to rack up 19 unanswered points until Bears TE Kellen Davis caught a 12-yard pass in the Panthers end zone with less than seven miniutes left in the game. The Bears fortunes soon took an even better turn when seconds later, CB Tim Jennings intercepted a Cam Newton pass. The pass was intended for Steve Smith, but he was unable to make the reception after slipping to the ground. Jennings made the short 25-yard run into the Panthers end zone and suddenly the Bears had gone from a 12-point deficit to leading the game by 1 point. However, the Panthers soon reclaimed the lead when kicker Medlock made a 45-yard field goal that bounced off the upright, giving Carolina a two-point lead at 22-20. It was Medlock's fifth field goal, giving him a 5-5 record in today's game. After resetting the punt several times due to the infamous Chicago wind blowing the football off the tee, Medlock punted poorly, allowing the Bears to start their next drive on the Panthers 22 yard line. After taking a time-out, Bears kicker Robbie Gould made a 41-yard field goal, giving the Bears the victory at 23-22. This win raises the Bears to a 6-1 record.
