Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon Reinstated on Conditional Basis

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon is back with his teammates – albeit with a few conditions. As announced by the NFL on Monday, the 2013 Pro Bowler “may join the team at training camp and participate in meetings, conditioning work and similar activities. Once arrangements have been confirmed regarding Gordon's clinical resources in Cleveland, he will be permitted to participate in all preseason activities, including practices and games.” However, he is still suspended for the first four games of the regular season, which means that the earliest he will be able to return to the field will be Monday, October 3. In the meantime, Gordon may still participate in team meetings and other activities but may not attend or participate in practices or games. Selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2012 Supplementary Draft, Gordon had a standout year in 2013, when he led the league in receiving yards, with a total of 1,646. However, his off-the-field troubles have dogged his NFL ambitions and led to multiple suspensions. As a result, Gordon hasn’t played in a game since December 2014, when he was once again suspended for violating team rules. In a letter to Gordon today, Commissioner Goodell wrote: "As we discussed at our [July 19] meeting, as Commissioner, I want nothing more than to see you turn your circumstances around and succeed. Countless others including your agent, teammates and coaches, Mr. Haslam and the leadership of the organization, the Program professionals and Jim Brown also have pledged to provide you with every resource at their disposal. But as you acknowledged, ultimately, your future is your responsibility. I have every belief that you can make the right choices, but it will be up to you to do so." Here’s hoping that Gordon can stay out of trouble this year and once again demonstrate the skills that led to his stellar season in 2013.
