New York Giants Top 49ers in Thrilling Last-Minute Comeback

Fans of the New York Giants are celebrating today after their team made a thrilling last-minute comeback to beat the San Francisco 49ers at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night. The 30-27 victory gives the Giants control of the NFC East with a 3-2 record, while the 49ers remain at the bottom of the NFC West with a 1-4 record. While the first half was characterized by long drives from both sides, all of those drives -- except for a two-yard catch by Giants RB Shane Vereen – resulted in field goals. However, after an uneven performance in the first half that ended with an intercepted throw to a well-covered Odell Beckham, Giants quarterback Eli Manning really began to hit his stride in the second half. A 17-yard touchdown pass to Beckham in the third quarter gave the Giants a 20-13 lead, before the 49ers evened the score early in the fourth quarter with a Garrett Celek touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick. After the Giants were only able to answer with a 24-yard field goal from Josh Brown, the 49ers came back with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Carlos Hyde with less than two minutes to go in the fourth.

That’s when Manning proved once again why he is considered one of the top clutch quarterbacks in the NFL. In a masterful eight-play drive, Manning marched his team 82 yards down the field to finish off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to TE Larry Donnell with just 0:21 seconds left on the clock. In a post-game press conference, Donnell talked about his spectacular catch. “It’s something we’ve been working on the whole week,” said Donnell. “We saw the two-high look. And we saw the middle field open in the green zone. Then Eli put it up there and I went and got it. Once I had it, I just had to hold that thing. You know, the game was on the line and I had to make a play. That’s all I was thinking.” The Giants will face their next opponent on the road in Week 6, when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on October 19. Then the Giants will return to MetLife Stadium on October 25, when the host the Dallas Cowboys.
