New York Jets Name Geno Smith As Starting Quarterback

The New York Jets have confirmed QB Geno Smith as the team’s Week 1 starter. New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan revealed the news at a press conference following the team’s 35-24 preseason loss to the New York Giants on Friday. “Really pleased with how Geno played tonight,” noted Ryan. “Really happy with him, I think he’s taken off from where he left off and I expect great things in the future with him. He’ll be our starter. He’s done everything that we’ve asked.” Although the Jets lost the game against the Giants, Smith’s overall performance throughout the preseason has impressed the team’s coaches. In the five quarters that he has played during the preseason, Smith has completed 23 of 33 attempted passes for 268 yards, including one touchdown. Perhaps even more importantly from Ryan’s perspective, Smith has also thrown only one interception during the preseason. Smith threw three interceptions when he faced the Giants in the 2013 preseason, a fact Ryan acknowledged during the press conference. “This was a little better than the last time he was here, playing against the same opponent,” observed Ryan. While Smith was ostensibly competing for the starting position against QB Michael Vick, most observers had already pegged Smith as the contender most likely to win the job. However, Ryan was quick to point out that he considered both players to be talented quarterbacks. “This is no slight to Mike Vick,” stated Ryan. “Because believe me like I said, I wanted to come out of this knowing that we have two really good quarterbacks and we think we can win games with. And I know in my heart I feel that we have two that we can win with.” The New York Jets play their preseason finale on Thursday, August 28, when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. The Jets return home to MetLife Stadium to kick off their regular season with a game against the Oakland Raiders on September 7.
