New York Jets QB Geno Smith Returns in Backup Role

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will most likely be suiting up for the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. According to the Jets’ injury report, Smith is listed as probable for Sunday’s game, which means there is a 75 percent chance that he will be able to play. Smith has been dealing with an injury to his right shoulder over the past week. Secure your New York Jets season ticket rights and Jets parking pass today with a discount Jets PSL! However, although Smith should be healthy enough to play, he won’t be the team’s starter on Sunday. Head coach Rex Ryan benched Smith in favor of Michael Vick after the first quarter of a Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills in which the struggling quarterback only completed two of eight attempted passes and threw three interceptions. While Vick assumed the starting quarterback role, Matt Simms was promoted to backup from the practice squad during Smith’s absence last week. Simms also took some snaps in last Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs when Vick was temporarily sidelined after hitting his head on the turf. While Sunday will mark Smith’s debut in his new role as backup to Vick, Coach Ryan said that Simms would also remain on the active roster for the time being, although he won’t be active for the Steelers game.

Although the Jets have so far posted a bleak 1-8 record, Smith assured the media that the team was still working to achieve a strong finish this season. “You can’t really put blame on any one person or any one player,” Smith said in an interview after a recent practice. “It’s a collective effort and we’ve lost these games as a team and we’ve got to find a way to win as a team. We’ve got to figure out a way to get a victory and it’s got to come sooner than later. We’re doing our best, but I can understand the frustration of the fans.” Regardless of the outcome for Sunday’s game, the Jets will soon have an opportunity to rest and readjust their strategy as they take a bye week in Week 11. When the New York Jets return in Week 12, they will face divisional rivals the Buffalo Bills in their second matchup of the season.
