The Panthers failed to end a two-game losing streak yesterday as they added their third loss in a row with a 16-12 defeat at home by the Seattle Seahawks. The offense on both teams started off slowly, with only a Seahawks' field goal in the first quarter, followed by one field goal from each team in the second quarter. With the Panthers down 6-3 in the second quarter, CB Captain Munnerlyn made a huge interception when he grabbed a pass intended for Seahawks TE Anthony McCoy and ran for a 33-yard touchdown, giving the Panthers their only lead of the game at 10-6. However, the Panthers offense failed to capitalize on this momentum, in fact, they contributed to a turnover that directly led to Seattle retaking the lead. Late in the third quarter RB DeAngelo Williams fumbled a pass from Newton that was recovered by Seahawks CB Brandon Browner. The Seahawks were then able to put together a 27-yard drive that led to a 13-yard pass from QB Russell Wilson to WR Golden Tate for the touchdown, returning the lead to the Seahawks, 13-10. After another Seahawks' field goal in the fourth quarter increased their lead to 16-10, Carolina still had several opportunities to recover the lead but was unable to pull it off. First, Cam Newton failed to connect with a short pass to TE Ben Hartsock, who was open in the endzone. Then, after the Seahawks took an intentional safety, the Panthers had the ball again with almost a full minute left in the game. Unfortunately for Carolina, that's when rookie DE Bruce Irvin stripped Newton of the ball, and possession was returned to Seattle, effectively ending the game.
The Panthers defense provided some of the only flashes of brilliance on the Panthers' side. Besides Munnerlyn's interception and touchdown run, Luke Kuechly performed well as middle LB as he filled in for the injured Jon Beason. The Panthers offense, on the other hand, had a dismal performance, with Newton completing just 12 of 29 attempted passes, giving Carolina a total 190 yards. The Carolina Panthers record drops to 1-4 with this loss, while the Seahawks move to a 3-2 record. Looking to get season tickets to your favorite team?
