Pittsburgh Steelers Seek Super Bowl at Heinz Field

Could Pittsburgh host Super Bowl LVII in 2023? Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II recently announced that the team has submitted a preliminary application to the NFL for Heinz Field to be the home of Super Bowl LVII. “We met this morning with local community leaders to provide an update on formally submitting our application to the NFL to bid for Super Bowl LVII in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania,” said Rooney in a statement issued by the Steelers. “The application is an early step in the bidding process, and we will continue to meet with representatives of the Mayor’s Office, County Executive’s Office, VisitPittsburgh, Allegheny Conference as well as other community leaders to review the requirements with the hopes of submitting our bid to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.” Of course, as noted by Rooney, the submission of the application is merely a first step in the bidding process. The NFL won’t even begin to investigate the teams that have submitted bids until 2018. However, the success of Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in 2014 has raised the possibility that other cities with northern climates could host a Super Bowl at an outdoor stadium. Besides reaping the economic benefits that come with hosting a major sports event, bringing Super Bowl LVII to Pittsburgh would also allow the team to make a clever marketing tie-in with the name of the hosting venue: Heinz 57 (LVII). While it’s unclear how many seats the Steelers would need to add to Heinz Field for the Super Bowl, Rooney revealed that the stadium’s total capacity will be boosted to over 70,000 by 2018. Although it remains to be seen if the Steelers’ bid will be successful, team president Rooney seemed to sum up most Steelers fans’ feelings about their chances when he said, “Why not?” The 2015 football season is nearly here!
