QB Johnny Manziel Will Start for Cleveland Browns vs. Titans

Quarterback Johnny Manziel will start for the Cleveland Browns against the Tennessee Titans at FirstEnergy Stadium this Sunday. Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine made the announcement in a press conference on Friday. Regular starter Joshua McCown has still not been cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head in the Browns’ season opener against the New York Jets last Sunday. After Manziel stepped in for McCown late in the first quarter during last week’s game, he made one touchdown pass, but also racked up three turnovers. The Browns ended up losing the game to the Jets, 10-31. “Anytime you have a player who can’t play, you’re always going to be disappointed, but Johnny’s had a good week,” stated Pettine. “It’s not like Josh practiced and we found out late he can’t go. When a guy goes into the protocol, you have to make the assumption that he’s not going to be back and then react to the news when he is. We’re prepared.” Are you prepared to see the Browns play in person at FirstEnergy Stadium this season? Despite Manziel’s uneven performance against the Jets and his recent elbow trouble, Pettine was confident that he would be well-prepared against the Titans this week. “The game reps to me are the most valuable ones he got,” noted Pettine, “So coming out of playing three quarters in New York and then getting a full week…we were able to carry over a lot of stuff from the end of training camp and from last week, so it’s all material that he’s very comfortable with.” Besides potentially giving Manziel a shot at taking the starting job, this Sunday’s matchup against the Titans is also notable for pitting two former Heisman Trophy winners against each other. Like Manziel, rookie Titans QB Marcus Mariota has also won college football’s most prestigious award.
